Who uses this site?
Homeowners across Washington County, Maryland. That includes city streets in Hagerstown, river-town homes in Williamsport, wooded lots near South Mountain in Boonsboro, and farmhouses around Smithsburg. Their gutters are usually doing one of four things wrong. They fill with leaves every fall. They spill over in summer thunderstorms. They freeze solid in winter. Or the downspouts dump water right where the basement can find it.
What makes gutters hard here?
Winter does the most damage. Hagerstown sits between humid subtropical and humid continental climates, with hot summers and cold winters that thaw and refreeze over and over. Water left in a clogged gutter freezes, expands and pries at seams and hangers. On the precipitation side, NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put Hagerstown at about 35.6 inches a year over roughly 124 days with measurable precipitation. That's less than much of Maryland, but it comes as summer downpours and winter snowmelt, both of which test a gutter fast.
How does the ground under Washington County matter?
Much of the Hagerstown Valley is limestone. The Maryland Geological Survey describes Washington County as a karst area and names the Hagerstown Valley among the Maryland valleys most associated with collapse sinkholes. You can't change the geology, but you can avoid concentrating roof water in one spot next to the foundation. Downspouts that carry water well away from the house, and buried lines that don't leak, are part of good gutter work here.
Do gutter guards really help?
Yes, for homes with trees nearby. A well-fitted guard keeps leaves, seeds and twigs out of the trough and downspouts, which is where clogs and overflow begin. It doesn't make gutters maintenance-free. Pollen and grit can film the top, and valleys still collect debris. But brushing off a guard now and then beats climbing up to scoop packed gutters every spring and fall.
Which guard is right?
- Micro-mesh for needles, maple seeds and wooded lots.
- Perforated metal for broad leaves on a tighter budget.
- Solid hoods for a covered look, with some overshoot in hard rain.
- Inserts only as a short-term do-it-yourself fix.
Signs it's time to call
- Overflow during storms, even after cleaning
- Ice packed in gutters and downspouts
- Gutters sagging or pulled off the fascia
- Water in the basement after heavy rain
- Peeling paint or rot on trim boards
- Ice patches on walks under downspouts
What about ice in the gutters?
Ice in gutters usually starts with heat escaping into the attic, which melts roof snow that refreezes at the eaves. Insulation and ventilation are the root fix. For trouble spots that keep icing, self-regulating heat cable in the gutters and downspouts can keep a melt path open. Guards help too, because clean gutters drain meltwater instead of trapping it.
Does a gutter contractor need a Maryland license?
Yes. Maryland law requires a contractor license from the Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC) to act as a home improvement contractor in the state. Contractors must show their MHIC license number on contracts, trucks and ads, and a home improvement contract can't require more than one third of the total price at signing. You can look up any license on the Maryland Department of Labor's site. Our Washington County gutter guide covers hiring, permits and drainage in more detail.
